Wedding at Windsor Ballrooms in 2017

If you’re planning a wedding in Montreal at the Windsor Ballrooms – have a look at this blog from a recent wedding I photographed at that stunning venue.

These are photos of Patricia and James’ summer wedding. This was everything a wedding should be: beautiful, romantic, full of love and laughter!

The Wedding Ceremony: St-Patrick’s Basilica, downtown Montreal

The St-Patrick’s Basilica is both grand and inspiring with it’s high ceilings and beautiful carved and painted woodwork. It has a long and gracious aisle for the bride to walk down with her father. Patricia arrived in true traditional fashion with her father in an antique Rolls Royce. montreal wedding, St-Patrick's BasilicaThey weren’t allowed to throw petals or rice outside the church so the bride’s mother found a great alternative. After the ceremony, guests were given colourful noisemakers to wave and congratulate the newly married couple.

Bridal Photo Session: Murray Hill Park, Westmount

The bride and groom took their limo with the bridal party to take photos in one of my favourite parks in Montreal. Tall trees, lush greenery makes Murray Hill Park an idyllic place for wedding photography.

Wedding Reception: Windsor Ballrooms, downtown Montreal.

After the photo session, the party continued on to The Windsor Ballrooms. If you’ve never been there, it’s worth a google search or a peek inside. The Windsor has two large elegant ballrooms and a sparkling central hallway lit by large chandeliers. The two ballrooms are equally stunning with a large chandelier giving the rooms a grandeur and magnificence that is perfect for a wedding reception. If you are looking for a very special wedding venue with the “wow” factor for your guests, the Windsor Ballrooms would be a perfect choice. The Windsor comes with it’s own wedding planner and catering team, so it has a “turn-key” appeal for busy couples who want to enjoy the wedding day without getting lost or overwhelmed with the planning. I got the change to meet and work with Amy Nunes for this event.

There was a candy bar set up in the corner. And a stunning sweet table was set up for guests to enjoy after the meal was done.

Wedding surprise: La Hora Loca

As a surprise for their guests, the couple organized an Hora Loca (Spanish for “crazy hour”). This is a hot new trend coming in from Latin America. Papo Ross and Banda Playa came on stage and the party took an even more festive turn with masks and hats were passed around to all the guests. Montreal wedding reception - Windsor BallroomsPapo Ross and bandThe dance floor, which had already been packed all night thanks to the fine work of Yvan Caro of Exclusive Events, became wild with excitement! The party continued well into the night. Hora Loca at montreal weddingguests enjoying the wedding partyPatricia and James really had a fairytale wedding from start to finish. A beautiful, romantic, emotional wedding day that will be remembered by all for years to come. I can’t thank them enough for including me in their incredible day.

Hotel Sofitel Montreal, Golden Mile

Sofitel wedding venue in MontrealHotel Sofitel Montreal, Golden Mile
1155 Sherbrooke Ouest
Montreal, Quebec, H3A 2N3

This is one of my most favourite locations in Montreal.  Perfect location, perfect service, perfect food.  If the meal you serve your guests is a priority, this is a top pick!  It is urban chic, close to downtown, with lots of nearby options for photography (including the McGill grounds and the steps of the Musée des Beaux Arts).

Omni Mount-Royal HotelOmni Mount-Royal Hotel wedding in Montreal

Omni Mount-Royal Hotel

Montreal, Quebec H3A 2R6
This beautiful hotel is located right downtown. The Omni has always been of my favourite wedding reception locations. This hotel has an elegant entrance, privacy of the reception halls being on their own floor. It is within walking distance to downtown restaurants and shopping. There are many locations close by for wedding photos. And it’s only a 10 minute drive to go to Old Montreal – if that’s where you would like to have your photos done. It offers parking (which is a very good thing) and has 2 beautiful rooms for receptions and a large windowed area for cocktails.

This venue is a great choice because it is located close to downtown, very private (with parking) and you can bring in your own caterer and bar (a rarity for Montreal). The Entrepots Dominion also gives you access to one of the most inspiring wedding planners I’ve ever met – Emmanuel Goubard.

The old Canada Pavilion (now available for rent) is nestled among beautifully landscaped gardens – also perfect for an outdoor wedding ceremony.  You can bring in your own catering and your own bar – and it has the added cache of being on the Grand Prix track. But book early – this venue is in high demand!

The newly renovated Ritz Carleton is the epitome of luxury and elegance. The historic oval room is still as breathtaking now as it was when I first started working there 12 years ago.  The garden is perfect for photos as well as the grand front entrance. A classic golf club location for a wedding. The advantage of a golf club is that you can also have the ceremony in this location. I’ve included a photo of the indoor ceremony set-up because I thought it was beautifully done. The outdoor covered terrasse is great for cocktails and generally a very good option not far from Montreal.

Surprise Wedding Proposal in Montreal

If you’re thinking of planning a surprise wedding proposal in Montreal, here are some photos for inspiration and a few tips and hints that you might find helpful.

As a wedding photographer, I’ve been asked to photograph a few surprise wedding proposals in Montreal. It is by far one of the most fun projects I do as a photographer. There’s an air of secrecy, planning, and nothing compares to the candid and spontaneous joy of the moment.

Here are some photos of my most recent surprise proposal in front of the Notre-Dame Basilica in the heart of Old Montreal. The images speak for themselves. The moment was perfect: the sun was setting, there was a little fall crispness in the air and everything had been planned to perfection.
Surprise Proposal MontrealSurprise Proposalsurprise proposal montrealmontreal wedding proposalromantic proposal in montrealAfter she had recovering from the shock and surprise of this unexpected proposal (and said “yes!”), I offered to do a mini engagement photo shoot around Old Montreal. We walked through the streets as the sun set and enjoyed the incredible moment of this life changing event. Evening photo shoots are special because the street lamps and city lights made these portraits rich with colour and full of emotion.

engement photo montrealengagement in montreal engagement in montreal montreal wedding proposalIf you’re considering hiring a photographer for your surprise wedding proposal, here are a few tips that I can recommend:

  1. Meet with the photographer ahead of time to scout the location and decide on the action plan for the proposal. Will the photographer be hidden or part of the story?
  2. Ask to see some of your photographer’s previous surprise-proposal photos. It shows that they have experience and will do a good job.
  3. On the day of the proposal – don’t forget to bring your cell phone to communicate and coordinate with your photographer.
  4. Have your photographer stay on to capture some portraits of the two of you. I always offer this to my clients – it will be your first official engagement photos and something you can use to announce your engagement with originality by email, Facebook and other social media!
  5. Nothing will compare to the emotion captured at that moment so having a prepared and seasoned photographer is key. It will be an incredible memory for years to come. As well as a great story to tell friends (with great photos to enhance the story!) Last but certainly not least, if you’re planning a surprise Wedding Proposal in Montreal, don’t forget that Kate Fellerath would be an excellent choice of photographer for your surprise proposal 😉 experienced, professional and always creative.

Destination Wedding in Old Montreal

Old Montreal Wedding_119Barbara and George organized their Montreal Destination Wedding all the way from Dubai! Barbara chose to have her wedding ceremony and reception at the Hotel Nelligan after reading my “Best Wedding Venues in Montreal” Blog.

Old Montreal WeddingBoth the bride and groom got ready at the hotel on a warm sunny day in early May. George and his groomsmen were able to take advantage of the unseasonably warm weather and get a drink before the ceremony at the Terrasse Nelligan on the roof of the hotel.hotel Nelligan weddingThe bride had all the room she needed in her large suite with a wide balcony and a panoramic view over the port of Old Montreal. We were able to stay out of sight and do all the photos on the balcony while the guests began to gather downstairs for the ceremony.Old Montreal Wedding_108aOld Montreal Wedding_106Barbara’s dress suited her perfectly. It also had an illusion neckline- which I love. The colour of the bridesmaids’ dresses added a pop of colour to the grey stone buildings of Old Montreal. The candlelight and chandeliers accented the exposed brick and stone to create an intimate setting for their wedding ceremony.Old Montreal Wedding_109After the ceremony, the bride and groom stepped out of the hotel and into the streets of Old Montreal for their photos. We also had time to do some fun shots with the bridal party. One of the reasons that the Hotel Nelligan is a great choice for a wedding is that it’s located so close to all the best places for wedding photos.
